Positive Behaviour Support

PBS at Yanchep Beach Primary School

Yanchep Beach Primary School began its PBS journey in 2016. PBS stands for Positive Behaviour Support in Schools. It is a way of helping students learn positive school behaviours through explicit teaching, staff modelling, and positive reinforcement.

Our PBS goal is to help students understand what is expected of them in every area of the school, including the classroom, assembly, library, and other shared spaces.

This approach is guided by a dedicated PBS team made up of teachers, administration staff, school captains, and parents.

PBS Values

Everything we do at our school is underpinned by our five PBS values:

  • We are Respectful
  • We are Responsible
  • We are Positive
  • We are Learners
  • We are Strong

PBS Matrices

Our PBS expectations are clearly displayed around the school through behaviour matrices. These help students, staff, and families understand what positive behaviour looks like in different school areas.

Examples include:

  • General school expectations
  • Bathrooms
  • Drink fountains
  • Parent, guardian, and community areas

School Mascot

In 2023, YBPS introduced a school mascot inspired by our connection to the ocean and the Fish Philosophy. The mascot appears at assemblies and major school events.

Mini Mascots

To support learning of PBS values, we use Mini Mascots representing each value:

  • Respectful Reef Shark
  • Responsible Stingray
  • Positive Pufferfish
  • Learner Lobster
  • Strong Seahorse

Kindergarten and Pre-Primary classes have their own sets of Mini Mascots. Students in Years 1–6 can earn Mini Mascots through positive behaviour and PBS awards.

RRPLS Tokens

RRPLS (pronounced “ripples”) are our positive behaviour tokens. Students earn RRPLS for demonstrating expected behaviours throughout the school day.

These are awarded individually and contribute to faction rewards. The RRPLS system was introduced in Term 3, 2024.

PBS Badges

At each whole school assembly, students from Pre-Primary to Year 6 are awarded PBS Badges.

One student from each class receives a badge aligned to the PBS value being recognised that assembly. These badges are sewn onto hats and worn proudly as a symbol of achievement.
