English at Yanchep Beach Primary School
At Yanchep Beach Primary School, we deliver a rich and purposeful English program designed to build confident readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. Our teaching practices are aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum and reflect a whole-school commitment to consistent, high-quality instruction from Kindergarten through to Year 6.
How We Teach English
English is taught explicitly through a structured approach that supports students to develop strong language and communication skills. Lessons are carefully planned and sequenced to ensure students build on what they know, practise new learning, and apply their skills with increasing independence.
Evidence-Informed Reading Instruction
Our reading instruction is guided by the Talk for Reading model and the body of research known as the Science of Reading. These approaches contain five essential components:
- Phonemic Awareness
- Phonics
- Fluency
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension
These components are taught explicitly each morning during our dedicated Literacy Block. This uninterrupted session ensures students receive targeted, systematic instruction that supports both early skill development and deeper comprehension as they progress through school.
Phonics and Spelling
We follow a whole-school phonics and spelling sequence that reflects current research and best practice:
- Kindergarten – Year 2: Heggerty and Sounds Write
- Year 3: Continued consolidation of phonics through Sounds Write
- Years 4 – 6: Introduction of Word Origins from 2026
Students participate in daily reading, writing, and dictation activities to help them develop fluency, accuracy, and confidence.
Writing
Our writing program is based on the Talk for Writing model, a well-established approach that strengthens students’ understanding of language and text structures. This approach follows three phases:
- Imitation – Students explore and learn from high-quality model texts.
- Innovation – Students adapt and reshape model texts with teacher guidance.
- Independent Application – Students apply their learning to craft their own original writing for a range of audiences and purposes.
Through explicit instruction in grammar, vocabulary, language features, and text organisation, we support students to become confident, creative, and capable writers.
Our Commitment to Literacy Excellence
At Yanchep Beach Primary School, we are dedicated to delivering an inclusive and consistent English program that supports the diverse needs of all students. By using evidence-based strategies and purposeful assessment, we ensure every child is challenged, supported, and celebrated in their literacy journey. Our goal is to nurture articulate, thoughtful, and engaged learners who can communicate effectively and think critically about the world around them.
Maths at Yanchep Beach Primary School
At Yanchep Beach Primary School, we strive to nurture confident, capable, and creative mathematicians. Our Mathematics program is aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum and is structured around three key content strands.
- Number and Algebra
- Measurement and Geometry
- Statistics and Probability
These are underpinned by four key proficiency strands that guide our teaching and learning:
- Understanding
- Fluency
- Problem Solving
- Reasoning
These skills are built into every lesson, helping students make connections, apply their learning in different situations, and grow in confidence as they solve problems both independently and with others.
Early Childhood Mathematics (Kindergarten to Year 2)
In the early years, our Mathematics program focuses on play-based and hands-on learning. Students build their understanding of key concepts through engaging, practical experiences such as:
- Hands-on materials (e.g. counters, blocks, number lines)
- Games, songs, and counting activities to build number skills and recognise patterns
- Mathematical discussion and clear vocabulary to support understanding
- Real-life experiences that make maths meaningful and relevant
We support students to build strong understanding in number, space, measurement, and data through engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences. These foundations help develop confident numeracy skills and mathematical thinking.
Middle and Upper Primary Mathematics (Years 3 to 6)
As students progress into the middle and upper years, they strengthen their understanding of number facts and begin to explore more abstract mathematical concepts. Our approach in these years includes:
- Explicit teaching of key concepts and strategies with guided and independent practice
- Problem-solving tasks that build reasoning and critical thinking
- Visual models and representations to support understanding
- Collaborative learning and discussion to build communication skills
- Opportunities to explain and reflect on their thinking
Students are taught to tackle more complex, multi-step problems using a range of strategies. With support and feedback, they build confidence and gradually develop independence in their learning.
Instructional Framework and Resources
To ensure consistent, high-quality teaching across the school, we use the Top 10 Maths program, aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum. Our approach supports students as they move from guided learning with their teacher to working independently, with lessons tailored to meet individual needs.
Teachers regularly use assessment and feedback to track student progress and adjust teaching, ensuring every child is supported and appropriately challenged.
Our Commitment to Mathematics Learning
At Yanchep Beach Primary School, we aim to foster a lifelong love of mathematics by making learning engaging, accessible, and relevant.
We encourage our students to:
- Take risks and embrace challenges
- Explore different strategies and explain their thinking
- Make connections between mathematical concepts and everyday life
- See themselves as capable and successful learners of mathematics
Through a balanced, evidence-based approach to mathematics instruction, we equip students with the skills and mindset they need to be confident problem-solvers in a rapidly changing world.
